Previous Intern Experiences

Azam Ansari, Master’s Student, TISS Mumbai

I did my internship with ‘I do’ on an ‘Action Research Project’ in Adilabad, Telangana which aimed to identify the last mile delivery gaps of various schemes and community practices related to Maternal and Child Health and Nutrition. I worked with different stakeholders ranging from the government officials to the tribal people in interior villages. It was one of the most enriching experiences for me as it provided me great opportunities to learn about social schemes, working mechanism of government setup, challenges of working in the rural ad tribal areas. I personally felt a lot motivated about the grass root work that the organization is associated with. The internship enhanced my leadership skills, analytical skills, budgeting and proposal skills to converge the NGO-government setup to bridge the last mile delivery gaps of the schemes.

The leadership and mentoring provided by the Rajesh Sir was very motivating. He is a man of action. Due to his continuous support, we were able to complete the study comprehensively in just one month. Quickly implementing of our ideas on the ground is another milestone achieved by the ‘I do’ team.

‘I do’ has given me an awesome experience through field work, where I got a chance to understand the problems of different world which I didn't come across before this.

Before joining ‘I do’, I was in dilemma that being an engineer how can I contribute in health sector?

But, after visiting so many interior tribal villages, I understood the root problems in the health sector as well as in other sectors.

This was my first professional NGO work. It helped me to understand ground realities and find solutions. I realized joy in contributing to the society through this opportunity.

Most importantly, the environment with team members was very friendly. I got a platform where I can share my ideas and views with the team to solve them in different ways.

I’m very glad that I got an opportunity to work with a great lady district collector, D. Divya, IAS, mam. Her dedication and interest towards work gave us motivation to work hard to bring a change in these undeveloped areas. We used to sit with her till late nights and did a lot of brainstorming to come up with solutions under the guidance of collector. This helped us to understand different government schemes and how to bring a large scale change.

Apart from that, coordination, planning and understanding are added benefits in joining with ‘I do’. Presentations, communication, team work, time management etc. are a few other things that I learned during this internship. Ultimately, this exposure helped me to take decisions and move forward towards social change.

‘I do’ organization is a very good platform for public health students and medical professionals to know about the ground realities & pilot new ideas. I was part of “Action Research project” in Adilabad district which aimed to identify the last mile delivery gaps of various schemes and community practices related to maternal and child health & nutrition. My role involves conducting interviews, FGDs, collecting data, analyze data, documentation etc. I realized that some tribal people still believe in unhealthy cultural practices as knowledge about healthy practices is not reaching them. Then I realized that as a public health student, I have to do something for these people. This internship helped me understand the common perspective of their cultural beliefs.

During the 1-month internship, I learnt a lot by meeting new persons and understanding the real situation on the ground. I got a good platform where I can share my thoughts and views with team members to solve them in different ways. The work culture at ‘I do’ is excellent and very encouraging. I learnt good coordination, planning, communication and presentation skills, time management etc. from the team.

Mentoring provided by Rajesh, Alok and Sainath is excellent.
